Should You Get a Second Opinion?

We Encourage Second Opinions

Call us for a second opinion at 281-633-8600 for our Sugar Land clinic or 713-234-3152 for our Houston Galleria clinic.  We encourage our patients to ask for second opinions when they need confirmation of their treatment options, and we provide second opinions to patients of other medical professionals when they have orthopedics and sports medicine questions.  Doctor Bennett is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon and a Fellowship Trained Sports Medicine Physician serving patients from all over Metro Houston.

Doctor Bennett on Medical Second Opinions

I encourage second opinions. If you’re not sure about the treatment options we’re offering to you, then talk to another orthopedic surgeon or sports medicine physician. We’re confident that we follow accepted medical standards of care in treating all of our patients, and a second opinion is not a problem because other doctors will confirm our adherence to those standards of care. At the same time, if you’re being treated by another orthopedic surgeon and you’d like a second opinion for a kneeelbow, or shoulder problem, I’d be happy to review your medical situation and treatment plan.

Patients always benefit from having another set of eyes look at their medical problems and planned treatments. Every doctors’ training is a little bit different, and everyone’s experience is a little different, so it’s beneficial for doctors and patients to use second opinions. As a patient, you may gain a little extra insight in talking to somebody else rather than just seeing the same doctor.

Are You Concerned About Your Progress After Surgery?

If you’re concerned about your progress after surgery, you can also get a second opinion to review your medical situation and your rehabilitation. Whether your insurance covers it depends on how far out they are from surgery. After a procedure, there’s a 90 or 60 day period (depending on insurance), during which everything that the patient gets done is paid for as a part of the surgery. So you wouldn’t be able to come and see me for a second opinion until you’re past that period because the insurance won’t usually cover it for you. If after that 60-90 day period, if your progress in regaining the function in your joint is not what you’d expected, we’d be happy to provide a second opinion at that point.

If you’re wondering what a typical orthopedic examination is like, this is Dr. Bennett demonstrating a shoulder examination, an elbow examination, and a knee examination.

If you’re experiencing any pain or stiffness problems in your joint, please call us to make an appointment. If we catch these problems early, we can usually treat them with medications, minimally invasive surgery, or physical therapy. Don’t let a small problem grow into a major issue by ignoring it. Call 281-633-8600 for an appointment at our Sugar Land clinic or 713-234-3152 for an appointment at our Houston Galleria clinic.
